2021 CACI Artist in Residence - Brian Gibson
CORE Arts Concord Inc (CACI), the arts nonprofit arm of CORE Contemporary, is excited to launch its new Artist in Residence (AIR), inviting local artist Brian Gibson to be its first artist in residence. The nonprofit's AIR program accepts proposal submissions from Las Vegas-based artists year round as a way to support artist development within our community. Following close review of submissions by CACI board members and co-founders, Nancy Good, Sapira Cheuk, and Angelina Saldana, Gibson was selected based upon talent and work ethic shown to date, need for working space, potential for measurable artist development, and how well the artist's proposal fit both the mission of CACI and the physical parameters of the studio space, among other factors.
Beginning March 24th, AIR Brian Gibson spent just over three weeks in the working studio located at CORE Contemporary, developing a series of work entitled “Cognitive Distortion/s”. The series, as proposed, will be a body of mixed-media paintings, along with a component of ambient audio, that interprets repression, loss of former selves, mental health, and self assessment. As the artist shares in his submission, “The reward of having a dedicated work space to create these works greatly improves my chances of completing the works and meeting my goals in exhibiting of the work in the future. As a musician and composer, I also have ideas for an ambient soundtrack to accompany the viewing of the physical works in a gallery space.”
“An AIR program has long been planned as part of the mentorship provided at CORE Contemporary, since opening in 2018,” states Gallery owner and CACI co-founder Nancy Good. “To have it finally in place within our arts nonprofit, whose very mission is developing and supporting the home-grown talent of Las Vegas, is the fulfillment of a dream. I'm tickled that it begins with Gibson, an artist whose progress I've tracked for many years.”
